Scheduled Classes - Shepherd's Center of Columbia

Our next session will start on January 11 and end on March 7, 2012.  A brochure with class descriptions, schedule, and registration form can be mailed to you.  Please call 779-4449 to be added to our mailing list.
Classes meet in the basement and the upper floor (3rd).  There is an elevator available.

 ADVENTURES IN LEARNING
                                          January 11 – March 7, 2012 * Indicates new class WEDNESDAYS
9:00 A.M. – 9:45 A.M. YOGA FOR SENIOR ADULTS – Debbie Fulmer  An easy class that everyone can do! Movements are simple and designed to   help your body stretch and tone without pain.  Come, give yoga a try and see   if you don’t   feel more relaxed and alert after our class.


9:00-9:45 a.m. BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS – Faith Stephenson, RN COFFEE FELLOWSHIP- 9:00 - Noon  

9:00 – 11:50 A.M. ACRYLIC AND WATERCOLOR PAINTING – Betty Rader   This is a class for intermediate and advanced students.


9:00 – 11:50 PLAYING BRIDGE – Instructor TBA   Bridge with some guidance and mainly having fun playing.


10:00 - 1050 EUROPE: BEGINNING THE 1930s-FROM BAD TO WORSE – Dr. John Stine  Prevention not achievement was the goal in the 1920s.   Dr. Stine continues on this topic up to the rise of Hitler to  1933.

DULCIMERS
– Anna Feagin     This course is for those who have dulcimers and would like to learn   how to play them or to play with more proficiency.  We will learn   how to tune and change the strings as well as perform all sorts   of music. 

HISTORY OF JAZZ & SWING
– Bob Knox  (see related article)   This session will give an overview of music styles that led to   jazz and swing and we will hear recordings of pre-swing ragtime.

*REMBRANDT: HIS LIFE AND WORK – Beverly Heisner   The paintings, drawings, etchings, portraits, religious subjects   and landscapes.

*GETTING TO KNOW YOU - Troy and Eunice McQueen   Each week class participants will be voluntarily responding to   questions designed to allow us to know more about each other –   those amusing, and interesting experiences we have all had.   For instance:  What is the “nuttiest” thing you have ever done?

CLASSIC MOVIES AND GREAT STARS
 – Marcia Hendrix     Revisit the great films of Hollywood’s Golden Age.  Marcia Hendrix,   long-time film buff and former teacher will lead the discussion.

WRITING FOR A PURPOSE
– Francie Markham       Calling all writers!  You are invited to join our writing class   for the winter session.  We are creating in various genres and   hope to have the art class illustrate our compositions for   publication in a book during the spring semester.

A STUDY OF CONTEMPORARY SHORT STORIES – Carol McAlpin   We will read selections from this generation’s finest   writers, stories from the 1990s to the present, perhaps   uncharted territory for many of us. 

MUSICAL THEATER, COMEDIES AND TRAGEDIES
–Dr. Luise Peake   Appreciate the narratives and rich history of musical theater.   (see related article)

*PROPHESY IN ANCIENT ISRAEL
– Rabbi Sanford Marcus   Types of prophets, the world situation that they addressed and   the significance of their messages.

*MAKING THE MIDDLE AGES: The Revival of Town Life – Susan Dillon   Come with me as we rebuild towns, trade, and society, 1000-1400.

*SOUTH CAROLINA ON MY MIND – Eunice McQueen   A varied collection of SC people, places and things that make our   state such a unique and fun place to live.  You may hear about an   interesting new place to visit or a “hidden gem” café.  You may even   learn a little South Carolina history.                    

HANDBELLS
– Betty Myers   Learn and enjoy how to make beautiful music with handbells.  No   experience necessary, though basic ability to read music is helpful.   We will be presenting “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and other   Disney favorites.  

1:15 – 2:15 p.m. 
MUSIC IS FUN
– Judy Doudoukjian    Join in the fun of singing with the “Bleatin’ Sheep”.You don’t have    to have a good voice, just a desire to sing, tap your toes, and maybe    dance a little.
 
TREKING WITH WARNER
 – Dr.Warner Montgomery       Join Warner as he once again shares stories, anecdotes and audio-    visuals of some of his travels.
